#1522 Frisco Mountain

Built in 1926 by Baldwin, for St. Louis–San Francisco Railway (SLSF or "Frisco")

The St. Louis Steam Train Association, selected the locomotive for restoration to operational condition.

Work was completed in 1988, the 1522 entered its second career as the only 4-8-2 in the United States to have had an excursion career.

It was returned to retirement in September 28 and 29, 2002, after running a farewell excursion.

The steam engine runs on #6 oil - also referred to as Bunker C, the tender holds 4500 gallons of oil. On average it burns 14 gallons of fuel per mile. The tender also holds 11,700 gallons of water (and the boiler holds another 4000 gallons). At an average consumption of 100 gallons of water per mile.

The Baldwin Locomotive Works built this Mountain-type (4-8-2) fast freight and passenger locomotive for $69,000. It was one of a series of 30 engines, and operated for 1,754,373 miles before its 1951 retirement. It has 69 ½” driving wheels, 28” x 28” cylinders, 210 lbs boiler pressure, is 88’ 6” long and weighs 598,890 lbs. The trailing axle under the cab is powered by a small, two-cylinder booster engine at low speeds, adding power for starting trains or on hills. Its tender holds 4,500 gallons of oil fuel and 11,700 gallons of water. It uses 10 – 15 gallons of fuel oil per mile, and produces 3600 horsepower.

The all-volunteer St. Louis Steam Train Association restored it to operation between Sept 1985 and Apr 1988, and gave it a second overhaul in 1998-99. From 1988 to 2002 it thrilled thousands as it operated on excursion trains throughout the Midwest, as well as being used by the film industry. A second tender carried 13,600 gallons of water to extend its operating range for these excursions.
