#4460 - Southern Pacific Railroad, 1943
Built by Lima Locomotive Works at a cost of $207,210.00, this 4-8-4 general
service GS-6 type locomotive was used in both freight and passenger service.
Number 4460 was the first in a series of 10, which were assigned to haul the
line’s Cascade and Klamath passenger trains between Portland, or and
Oakland, CA. The heavy demand of World War II saw the engine operating
in freight as well. It has 73” drive wheels and weighs 867,500 lbs and was
capable of generating 5,500 horsepower It is semi-streamlined having a
‘skyline casing’ covering the domes on top of the boiler. This feature was
designed to lift smoke over the cab and out of the eyes of the engineer .
Number 4460 pulled the last steam powered train on the Southern Pacific in
1958. It was donated in 1959 by the Southern Pacific Railroad.
