Oldest locomotive in MOT collection 1858
This 4-4-0 American type locomotive was designed
by Master Machinist George S. Griggs and built at the Boston and Providence
railroad shops. The Daniel Nason is the only surviving example of the 'Dutch
Wagon' practice where steam cylinders are inside the locomotive frame, a design
popular prior to the Civil War. The 'insider' was designed as a wood burning
locomotive though it burned coal. It has 16" X 20" cylinders and 54" drive
wheels which gave it a top speed of 60 miles per hour. Donated in 1987 by the
"Friends of the Danbury Collection."
