Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O's) #2727 pulled heavy and fast freight
though the Allegheny mountain country of Virginia and West Virginia.
This 105-foot-long giant that weighed 425 tons could generate more
than 5,000 horsepower. Built by the American Locomotive Co. in 1944
as part of an order of 40 locomotives and included roller bearings on
all of it's axles. The 2-8-4 #2727 is classified as a Kanawha for a
West Virginia river that flows through the C&O's operating area.
Most other railroads called this 2-8-4 wheel arrangement a Berkshire.
It saw just 13 years of service before joining the MOT collection.
At the time of its donation, only the MacArthur Bridge at St. Louis
would accommodate the 15-foot 7- inch tall locomotive, as it traveled
across the Mississippi River.
Did You Realize: Approximately 150 locomotive manufacturing companies existed between 1830 and 1950.
